About JEDI: Action Plan: Cultural Awareness

    Strategic Direction: To work in partnership with federal and provincial departments and agencies and the private sector in the development, implementation and coordination of Mi'kmaq and Maliseet cross-cultural awareness activities within New Brunswick.

Activities

    1) Advocate for mandatory Aboriginal education courses and cultural awareness training of future teachers (CA)

      Objective:

      • to ensure future educators are culturally sensitive to the needs of Aboriginal students
      • to create an awareness amongst post-secondary institutions of the importance and benefits of cultural awareness training 

    2) Create a greater awareness amongst the private sector of the importance and benefits of cultural awareness training (CA)

      Objective:

      • to develop a resource information kit
      • to deliver cultural awareness training to NBs private sector

    3) Provide advice and cultural expertise to enhance the delivery and appropriateness of cross-cultural awareness training (CA)

      Objective:

      • to provide a central source of expertise to government departments and private sector facilitators involved in the delivery of cross-cultural awareness training
      • to ensure cultural appropriate resource materials

    4) Facilitate and/or assist in the development of activities to recognize special  Aboriginal occasions (CA)

      Objective:

      • to host sessions or events to acknowledge specific Aboriginal occasions (e.g. National Aboriginal Day)
      • to provide support to activities which promote specific Aboriginal occasions

    5) Create a forum to encourage Aboriginal artists to market their skills and/or to inspire potential artists (CA)

      Objective:

      • to increase awareness of economic development opportunities
      • to provide an avenue for skill development and promotion

    6) Advocate for mandatory cultural awareness training of NB federal and provincial public servants and politicians (CA)

      Objective:

      • to ensure NBs civil servants and politicians are culturally sensitive to the needs of Aboriginal people
      • to ensure a safe and culturally friendly environment for Aboriginal civil servants
      • to ensure a safe and culturally friendly environment for Aboriginal people to access federal and provincial programs and/or information

    7) Create a forum to acknowledge the achievements of NB Aboriginal people (CA)

      Objective:

      • to acknowledge and celebrate the successes of Aboriginal people (e.g. volunteers, leadership etc.)
