Economic, Business & Skill Development

    Strategic direction: To foster a holistic approach to Aboriginal economic development through communication, networking, entrepreneurship development and capacity building.

Activities

    1) Promotion of NB Aboriginal procurement ready businesses (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to create greater awareness amongst federal, provincial, municipal gvts. of Aboriginal businesses to market NB Aboriginal businesses

    2) Update NB Aboriginal Business Directory (CED)

      Objective:

      • to keep Directory current
      • to increase profile of Aboriginal businesses
      • to increase procurement opportunities

    3) Support Economic Development Officer representation at national economic development conferences (CED)

      Objective:

      • to support professional development
      • to strengthen links to national organizations and resources

    4) Advocate for JEDI Community Economic Development Committee representation on national and local boards (CED)

      Objective:

      • to support professional development
      • to profile the needs of NB Aboriginal people
      • to increase awareness and profile of JEDI

    5) Facilitate First Nations Business Workshops (CED)

      Objective:

      • to improve communication flow at grass root level
      • to encourage entrepreneurial activity

    6) Support the development of community profiles (CED)

      Objective:

      • to profile existing community resources
      • to identify opportunities for growth
      • to create awareness amongst government departments and private sector

    7) Review and support professional development programs for economic development officers (CED)

      Objective:

      • to enhance EDO professional development
      • to identify and support a standard program for capacity building

    8) Recruitment of guest speakers (CED, Plenary)

      Objective:

      • to increase awareness of organizations, programs and resources
      • to support professional development
      • to share information and best practices

    9) Support implementation and maintenance of Aboriginal Business Service Network, ABSN (CED)

      Objective:

      • to profile needs of NB Aboriginal people
      • to ensure easy access and relevant information      

    10) Facilitate inter-committee presentations and reports amongst JEDI sub-committees (CED)

      Objective:

      • to strengthen communication links between JEDI sub-committees
      • to identify opportunities for joint initiatives
      • to provide input and support to activities

    11) Advocate for the establishment of a senior federal/provincial Aboriginal Economic Development Advisor (CED)

      Objective:

      • to assist Community Economic Development Officers in the development of projects
      • to enhance economic development opportunities

    12) Stimulate procurement activity of NB Aboriginal businesses (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to assist Aboriginal businesses with the federal/provincial procurement process
      • to increase the number of Aboriginal procurement contracts
      • to create awareness of procurement opportunities

    13) Advocate for the inclusion of Aboriginal participation in specific procurement
    events (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to ensure Aboriginal representation
      • to profile NB Aboriginal businesses

    14) Advocate for a NB Aboriginal Procurement and Joint Venture Officer (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to assist Aboriginal businesses with the federal/provincial procurement process
      • to provide continuity of services to Aboriginal businesses
      • to identify joint venture opportunities

    15) Development of a strategy to stimulate joint venture activities (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to increase joint venture opportunities
      • to create a greater awareness amongst First Nation communities, Aboriginal organizations and Aboriginal entrepreneurs of the opportunities and benefits of joint ventures
      • to share best practices

    16.) Initiate targeted reverse trade forums (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to showcase procurement ready Aboriginal businesses
      • to gain knowledge of future procurement needs
      • to connect potential Aboriginal suppliers with government buyers

    17) Review procurement process and federal set-aside policy (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to increase knowledge and understanding of policies
      • to understand procurement process from perspective of entrepreneur
      • to identify barriers or miscommunications

    18) Host National PSAB (Procurement Strategy for Aboriginal Businesses) meeting of federal department coordinators (PJVC)

      Objective:

      • to assist national PSAB Coordinator in bringing national forum to NB
      • to ensure Atlantic regional concerns are voiced at national level

    19) Establish measurement tool for procurement activity of Aboriginal businesses

      Objective:

      • to measure level of Aboriginal procurement activity
      • to evaluate PJVC effectiveness  

    20) Promote PSAB amongst Federal Material Managers (PSAB)

      Objective:

      • to enhance knowledge of PSAB amongst Federal Material Managers in NB

    21) Facilitate FAM (Familiarization) Tour II  - Value-added wood sector & FAM Tour I - Fisheries sector (RS)

      Objective:

      • to identify tangible opportunities in the value-added wood sector
      • to enhance economic development opportunities in the fisheries sector

    22) Advocate for the development of policies and management practices for the  protection of natural resources used by Aboriginal people in traditional crafts and medicines (RS)

      Objective:

      • to increase the level of awareness of land based resources used in traditional ceremonies, medicines and crafting
      • to ensure protection of the natural resources used by Aboriginal people in traditional crafts, medicines, foods or ceremonies
      • to protect resources from bi-product destruction

    23) Support the creation of an inventory of the fauna and flora used by Aboriginal people in traditional crafts, medicines, and ceremonies (RS)

      Objective:

      • to identify and document natural resource needs of Aboriginal people used for medicines, ceremonies, foods, and crafts
      • to share cultural values with respect to above

    24) Facilitate >Black Ash= workshop - pilot project (RS)

      Objective:

      • to create awareness of the uses of Black Ash amongst Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people
      • to develop a protocol for hassle free access of Black Ash by Aboriginal crafters prior to its destruction (i.e. clear cutting)

    25) Identification of business and training opportunities that will enhance economic       growth within the natural resource sectors (i.e. forestry, aquaculture, natural gas) (RS)

      Objective:

      • to facilitate or support workshops which will enhance knowledge and/or skill development
      • to generate list of skill building activities
      • to increase economic development opportunities within resource sectors

    26) Identification and communication of training needs for the certification and/or skill development of Aboriginal people within the resource sectors (RS)

      Objective:

      • to bridge gaps in skill readiness
      • to evaluate and make recommendations for future training programs
      • to provide information on certification and the importance of building a certified workforce
      • to encourage long-term human resource planning in the resource sectors
